Genius Hour

On the last day of school I took Drenna and I's Genius Hour project home so I could work on it. Once I had the time to do it I called my Uncle and he agreed to help me with it. So we picked it up from my house and started the work on it. The first thing he did was take off the piece of wood at the bottom of the go-kart and then cut off two square shapes at the bottom to make room to turn. My Uncle grabbed a washer screw and I got to insert it into the middle of the block. Once we did that we checked to see if the wood could turn, it did, so tick that off our list. The next thing we did was add on the wheels, there was an old rusty bike round the back and the tires were really good to use. My Uncle took a hacksaw and sawed the metal bars off so that the wheels could come off. Finally we got the wheels off and we were ready to put them on. With the two blocks of wood he sawed off earlier, I helped him attach it underneath the go-kart where the wheels are meant to go; We hammered it in and then BOOM the wheels were in! The last step was to add the front wheels, the front wheels were the easiest to do, they were the type of wheels that are what spinny chairs have, so our go-kart is going to be a drift type. I drilled a hole (a biiig hole) and then we got the bottom of the wheel and nailed it in, we did that to the other side, the last step to do was to drill two little holes at the bottom, and then thread the rope through. I thread the rope through and knotted it! The go-kart was finished!, here are some photo's I took.

Today we nailed all our wood together with screws and a hammer, we managed to get the shape of the go kart we wanted to get  and it came out really cool, Me and Drenna were proud with the result, the last thing we need to do is try to attatch the wheels on so that it will move. We also attached the bottom part of the seat so that we have protection and we are going to add a backing board to put the top part of the chair on.

Today we painted our slabs of wood that we had gotten cut by Mrs Parkinson, we spray painted one piece green and then painted the other two pieces a dark blue colour, next week we are going to try and connect all the wood together.

We have our wood and chair so far, Mrs Parkinson is going to cut our wood for us for the shape we need towards the bottom of our go-kart, once she has brought it back we are somehow going to connect the chair to the pieces of wood we have, Yesterday we got a chair and disconnected the frame of it by unscrewing all the screws out from underneath the chair and behind the chair, so far we have our chair and our wood all we need now is the metal Axel, the rope and the wheels we need for it to move. Once we have all the equipment needed we are going to connect it all together to get our finished product.

Designs of wooden go-karts

Idea’s: Paint, spray paint, number plate 16ADA

Questions: we need to find out how to make a brake to stop the kart when we want it too.

Driving question: will we be able to make our own go-kart by ourselves with the materials we have?
